If you are an SEO beginner, you are probably thinking about whether you can increase your ranking without getting any website backlinks.
Well, the good news is… you certainly can!
In this article, I will share with you some techniques you can use so that you can focus on creating valuable content, on-page SEO, and off-page mentions.
Let’s get started!
Effective Ways You Can Rank Your Website Without Backlinks
Produce only valuable content
Give your audience what they want to know by answering a search query thoroughly.
Creating quality content will potentially increase user engagement on your blog, which will then tell the search engines (particularly Google) that your content is indeed valuable and useful.
That being so will increase your website ranking.
Pro Tip: If you want to get higher rankings, make sure you provide clear answers and go more in-depth than the competition. It’s also beneficial if you provide illustrations and graphics to help your audience understand your content clearly.
Replicate your competitor’s on-page SEO strategy
If you know who your competitors are then visit their website and study their content to see what SEO strategy they use without website backlinks.
I know you might think that only long-form articles have the best chance when it comes to ranking in search engines.
But honestly, I’ve seen a lot of posts with only about 500 words shown on the first page of Google.
So it’s safe to say that it’s not always the case.
It may be because the article contains lots of optimized photos or videos, or maybe they received a lot of comments from readers.
That said, it’s best to check pages that are ranking for each particular keyword and then study each one.
You might learn a thing or two from their SEO strategy.
Use long tail keywords
When I was a beginner, I thought I could simply choose any keyword and that would be enough for me to stand a chance at ranking my website.
But boy was I wrong.
If you are writing an article about productivity, don’t just use ‘productivity’ as your keyword and mention this keyword many times in your article.
This is called a ‘short-tail keyword’, and while it can potentially return large amounts of traffic, there is a small chance for you to rank your website especially since there are already tons of competitors out there using the same keyword.
I’m not saying it’s impossible, it’s just that as a beginner, it’s best to use long-tail keywords so you can slowly but surely increase your ranking.
What are long-tail keywords and why should you aim for them?
Long tail keywords are longer and are niche-specific. They generally have a low-search volume and they also generate lower competition, but that’s what makes them easier to rank for.
For example, instead of using “productivity” as your keyword, try using any of the following:
- how to be productive at home
- how to have a productive day
- productivity tips for work
These keywords are searched only hundreds of times per day but ranking highly for these terms will be easier and quicker to achieve.
Consequently, if you rank highly for lots of these keywords, your overall blog traffic will increase.
Over time, you may be able to consider ranking for more competitive keywords.
Build internal links
For each of your longer, cornerstone content, link smaller supporting blog posts on your website to this main page. It will help them achieve higher rankings on Google.
Make sure your website is mobile-friendly
Nowadays, people love viewing content using their mobile phones.
Needless to say that if your website is not properly rendering on mobile, this will have a negative impact on user experience, sales, and even ranking.
So make sure to optimize your site not just for desktop, but also for mobile devices.
Get customer reviews
If you own a website for an actual business, you have to know that customer reviews can help you rank on search engines as well.
For many obvious reasons, it’s certainly worth your time and effort to ensure you are providing the best service possible to your customers.
This will not only lead to great reviews but also more sales!
Ensure your site is easy to navigateI've learned over the years that when it comes to designing my website, less is more. Click To Tweet
If you make your blog too complicated to begin with, it’s more likely that your visitors will get frustrated and will just leave your website within the first few minutes.
This can increase the bounce rate and lower the time spent on your site which are both negative SEO factors.
Get an SSL certificate for your website
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and it’s been said that having one on your site can increase its ranking.
The basic explanation for this is that it shows your visitors that your website is safe and secure and that it can be trusted.
Nowadays, people will see a warning from search engines if a website is not secure which makes them want to leave the site immediately.
Thus, having an SSL certificate will ensure that your reputation and rankings will not be harmed.
Increase your site speed
Last but not the least, you can improve your site ranking without website backlinks by increasing the speed of your website.
Nowadays, no one has the time nor patience to wait for a website to load, no matter how good the content is.
Chances are they will leave your website entirely if they have to wait more than a few seconds just to check out your page.
Having said that, a faster loading site improves your visitor’s user experience and influences your website ranking on search engines.
Final Thoughts: Ranking Your Site Without Website Backlinks
If your blog is still new, without existing website backlinks, and has yet to establish any authority within your chosen niche, then you can still rank highly on search engines using the methods mentioned in this article.
Then, as your blog becomes competitive, you can try to slowly build website backlinks to rank higher.
But for now, don’t worry about getting website backlinks just yet!
Focus on creating valuable content and drawing your target audience to your secure and fast-loading website, and soon you’ll see great results!
